In 2017 we have been lucky enough to have witnessed amazing women doing amazing things all over the world to champion intersectional feminism, excel in their art and tear down boundaries. To that girls, we salute you. And crush on you. Without further ado, here are Neon Moon’s top 10 girl crushes.
1. Hari Nef

Hair Nef is a transgender writer, actress and model who is taking the fashion world by storm with her striking elegance and unique presence. We absolutely adore her, and cannot wait to see her career blossom in the coming years.
2. Emma Watson

What can we say. Started from Hermione now we here. Emma Watson’s career has transitioned from acting to academia, championing the He for She campaign in front of the UN and taking time out from acting to continue her work following her degree. What a boss.

Beyoncé’s powerful track Formation is the cherry on the top of her black power sundae. Not only is Beyoncé a music icon but has used her fame, especially in recent years, to speak out about racism and further the #blacklivesmatter movement. Note her iconic Super Bowl performance. Bey, you’re outstanding.

Rihanna has absolutely slayed the charts over the length of her career and continues to work work work harder than many of her contemporaries, churning out number ones and bossing live performances, hopefully still for many years to come. Please be our friend RihRih, we’ll toss in a free bra.

Lady Gaga, another musical star who uses her fame to stand up for diversity and outsiders. Not only is she an outstanding performer on screen and stage but has become the face for rape prevention and education, with her track Til It Happens To You dedicated to rape victims all over the world, specifically in university. Amazing work by an amazing woman.
6. Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham stands against Photoshop, misogyny and objectification, and champions awareness for endometriosis, an illness from which she suffers. Her hit HBO series Girls has characters written to break boundaries and tear down stereotypes and present a new type of female to the mainstream media. Her outspoken and unapologetic nature make Lena a great role model.
7. Angelina Jolie

Angelina, where do we start. A stellar movie career, undergoing a double mastectomy under the glaring lights of a hounding media presence as well as serving for the UN to help end sexual violence in conflict alongside other notable and honourable charity work means that when we grow up we want to be Angelina Jolie.

Since coming out as gay Ellen has been a force to be reckoned with for LGBT rights and representation, calling on audiences to put pressure on their positions as LGBT supporters as well as making fantastic movies and wowing us with her social media presence. Ellen is an inspiration to us all.
9. Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel has been on our radar ever since she charmed our pants off in Elf way back and made us weep (not just at how gorgeous she is) in 500 Days of Summer. Now she’s fully established in the world of film, music and is co-founder of Hello Giggles, a thriving platform for news and opinion pieces. How could our CEO and Founder Hayat Rachi escape from our list of girl crushes? Hayat bosses it every single day, making a name for herself in a lingerie industry that seems to demand its participants conform and suffer. Hayat, you’re making the world a better place for all of us.
